House hunting

Tomorrow we fly off into the great unknown to do a bit of house hunting. We have been doing some online peeping, but this is going to be the big trip where we get to see for ourselves what the houses really are like. I have a rather nebulous idea of what I am looking for: I would like to have a bathroom off of the master bedroom, we need a fenced back yard, we are looking for a house with a basement, and I would like four bedrooms but would take three.

What are some things you like about your dwelling? What would you change about your current dwelling?

Hurray for you! Some things I love: our neighborhood and kinship with our neighbors, open, airy living spaces and large bedrooms.

Some things I wish were better: a bigger kitchen with an island, and a finished basement that is bigger than a half-basement!

Good luck!

I like a big kitchen that looks out onto a den/living room type of thing. I like my bathroom off the master, and really I guess it is all about the floorplan.

Have fun!

I like the open layout of my house but here are some of the things I would love to have.

1. Laundry room
2. more storage
3. more counter and cabinet space
4. another bathroom
5. A shower that does not burn you if someone flushes in the other bathroom
6. A garden tub
7. An office
8. a three car garage
9. A smaller lot
10. a porch

That is just a few of the things that I can think of. I can live with what i have but I dream.

I like that our house is bright and sunny. I would like to change my closet situation.

Think about the things you CAN'T change like location, view, school district. If you can imagine the cosmetic changes you are half way there.

Good luck!

I like the acoustic and physical separation between the baby/children's bed room and mine. I like how my front room, kitchen, dining area are all one contiguous space. I'm not into formality, and this is the area that we live in. I have to baby proof the whole thing, but the baby can range the whole house as I work while I keep an eye on him (if he isn't clingy).

But truthfully, the neighbors can make or break a place. I've heard and lived through (as a child) some horrible neighbor situations (pot growing, rifle shooting at animals, poisoning of animals, their animals eating our animals, etc).

School districts might also make a difference. Also, any major construction projects going on in the area (the freeway will be in my backyard? really?) (=

Good luck

I agree with Cathy to think about the unchangeables like schools and location. I wish we had considered schools more when we moved here, but our one child at the time was so young we didn't really think about it (and we didn't think we'd be here as long as we have been).

I like having my kitchen and family room connected - that way I can be in the kitchen and the kids are in the family room and we're still together. I wish that my master bedroom was not on the street side of the house, because street noises often wake me up.

Good luck and have fun!

Good luck!

I love how sunny the family room is as that is where we spend all our time. I love the master bath, but it isn't a do or die for me.

I hate our kitchen, but that is changeable, some day.

ugh, we're househunting, too. it's so stressful, isn't it? i guess it's especially stressful when it's your first. we rent now, so we're really excited about moving, but also really anxious and a little too antsy, i think. it just starts to get me down that we still rent! arg! i know, i know...soon enough!
