Eating good

I am a person that likes to stock up on items. I think that a big part of this behavior comes from being LDS. We are frequently reminded that we should have food stored up in case of emergency. Due to our upcoming move we have switched from stocking up mode to eating mode. I did a big stock up on chicken and ground beef early in March but since then our grocery shopping has been limited to milk, fresh fruit and other perishable items.

It has been a very interesting experiment to see how well we could eat off our food storage and I am quite pleased by how well we are eating. I think I may have over done it a bit on the chicken, but Evan and Harry love eating chicken. They will frequently eat more than I will and Evan often asks to have chicken for dinner. It is nice to know that my food storage practices are working and that should something happen we would be able to eat pretty normally for a time.

Now that I have quality down I will have to work on quantity. We don't even have close to a year's supply of food, but then I am not going to sweat that one too much. With all of our moving around it really is not too practical to have a massive food storage.

My husband grew up in an area of Canada that the LDS population is HUGE! They made the YUMMIEST canned/dried potatoes for storage .... They were by far the best not fresh potatoes I have ever had.

I think being prepared is so important. Moving totally puts a damper on that but I always found that we saved $ before the move by eating things up then were able to restock once we arrived in the new location :)

The secret to good food storage seems to be storing what you like to eat. Friends gave us buckets of whole grain wheat that they didn't want to move. Now we just have to purchase a good wheat grinder.

We haven't even start our food storage yet. We have been living in apartmens forever and moving so we just haven't had the chance. Really need to start planning

Happy 29th birthday yesterday. I'm coming up on my 6th 29th birthday next month!

I have food storage issues since we too move frequently. I do better in some places than others. I am not doing so hot right now.

So, I am trying to get caught up on your posts. I had no idea that yarn was for you!!! I am so excited that you get to have it!!! Isn't it just lovely!! One of a kind, that's for sure. Hand dyed, hand spun, hand selected fibers. And the scarf is beautiful! It turned out so nice! Your kids pictures are so cute. I hope you had a really nice birthday.

PS: I couldn't take pictures of me holding the cactus because I was the only one home and holding the cactus is a two handed job! sorry. Maybe later.

I keep meaning to email you about what (and how) you store as my storage is haphazard at best. Last time we actually had to eat from storage it was a disaster. My mother would be horrified if she knew the state of my stockpiling. If my freezer is operational I'm ok, but the moment we lose power I am totally up a creek.

We're also getting ready to move, and I'm finding myself surprised at how simply we can manage!! We certainly don't have food stored for long-term, but I like that idea!
