Sigh

During all the craziness of the holidays I had to do my oh so lovely glucose test to determine if I had gestational diabetes. I have quite a few of the risk factors. Having sailed through the tests on my previous pregnancies I blithely assumed that the results would be the same. Sadly they were not. After the delightful fun of starving and then hanging around the lab for 4 hours (they were running behind so the test started later) I got the diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes.

I have the feeling that I was borderline with my other pregnancies but that my holiday eating tipped the balance for the tests this time around. Mostly this means that I will have to be very careful about what I eat, so if I am good it should not be too big of an impact. The part of all this that really has me frustrated is that it means more appointments. I am heartily sick of waiting rooms. I have been spending a high amount of time in them of late and only have more to look forward with Evan's upcoming pacemaker surgery.

And now for something a bit more upbeat. We have been enjoying nice "warm" weather of late. I took the kids to the zoo for the first time in months and we did not freeze. All we needed was our jackets to keep the chill off. This warm weather has given me an infusion of extra energy. I actually felt like cleaning this morning instead of wanting to crawl back into bed and sleep.

Oh man, so sorry to hear about that news. It's tough to just be pregnant, let alone have something complicated added to it. Seems like you have a positive attitude about it, though.

I am so sorry! That is not going to be fun. As if pregnancy wasn't difficult enough as it is. Keep your chin up! Just think of all that knitting you can get done while "waiting" in the waiting rooms. That's the only way I can deal with them!

Oh sorry about the GD diagnosis! My doctor didn't even have me tested this last pregnancy.

Oh ack. I had getstational diabetes as well, but I had to inject insulin.

The diet is pretty hard to stick to, but I did it faithfully and my blood sugar never rose an iota.

Good luck! As soon as you deliver the baby, I'll send you your favorite sweets! ;)

Well warm weather does boost the energy that's for sure.

Sometimes God uses things we don't understand to help us do something... this GD may be to help you eat better during this pregnancy, and the waiting rooms well maybe He wants you to rest a little too.

When does Evan have the surgery again?

Ick. Diabetes of any kind is no fun. Stick to the diet though. It's only for a short time and it'll help prevent complications.

FYI-the holiday eating wouldn't affect the test results, thats why you fast prior to the test. The only lab that shows the affect of long term (or even short term eating) habbits is the HGB-A1C. If you were mounting a proper insulin response the fasting period should have been enough to lower your blood sugar. The test also measures how your body responds to the glucose (also not affected by eating habits). Gestational diabetes gets more severe with each pregnancy, which is likely why it showed up now. The diagnosis of gestational diabetes also puts you at risk for developing type 2 diabetes in the future so make sure you are checked frequently.

Gosh that sucks. Hopefully it will not be too much of a problem.

You poor thing! I was also "borderline" with Kiddo. I was only 3 points away from being diabetic, so they told me. They still put me on a diet as though I WAS diabetic. The main thing I remember was that I was supposed to make sure I had some protein in every meal.

I became a big fan of Wendy's $.99 chicken sandwich and Minute Maid Light lemonade. And Coke Zero. Great stuff.
